Art Club #13

Displaying photo 5.JPG

This art club we decided to vary the medium in which we work, as maybe this was the reason so few people attended last time. Although it had no immediate effect on attendence (it was still an exclusively IB session, but at least our year 10 girl stayed all the way through this time) I hope that when people see it in the corridor, they might just think about coming along one Tuesday.

Coming up with an initial idea was vital, and we were inspired by the autumn session landscapes we did a while ago. Ms. Platt was one one who concretely came up the concept of continuing this seasonal theme, and it agreed completely with the vague ideas to paint a winter scene we ourselves had had.

It also tallies quite nicely with our recycling efforts (which will be detailed in another post), as Ms. Platt gave us a huge sheet of black fabric she rescued from the school Halloween disco, which we stretched out across three tables and worked on together. It was wonderful to have a group project again, as our last one turned out so well, although the lack of space wasn't as extreme or as inconvenient as last time and we simply used the intertwine our separate sections at the point they intersected, rather than draw definite barriers between one person's work and another's.

We designated a little corner for everybody, and they got to work with some white paint we had mixed and some grey oil pastels in case they wanted to add shadow or anything of the sort. While it certainly may have been nice to got outside for close-up sketches, it was just far too cold, despite the constantly recurring observation that -20 is a positively tropical temperature for Russia in January. We settled for the view out of the two huge windows of the art room, which gave us plenty to work from, and some people just worked without reference images.

Although I had to leave fifteen minutes early, due to transportation logistics, the finished piece turned out wonderfully. Ira and Katarina finished off the middle section with some self-promotion, which can't hurt, and all the fragments worked together wonderfully.

Hopefully, when people see how active we are and how exciting Art Club is, although we did put up the display a later, we will have more people joining us next time.
