Yesterday was the first session of art club since the holidays! It was the first week back and so naturally we more than expected some anemic attendance, but having nobody but year 12 come was quite a shock.
The only other student who came was a dedicated year 10, who had to go half-way and leave her artwork unfinished, but otherwise it was an all IB club this time around, so we decided very quickly on our subject matter. We managed to get a total of six finished pieces in graphite pencil and we decided to revisit portraiture.
Our model was a fellow IB student, Sasha, and she generously volunteered to pose. The main thing we learned from this exercise though was that a portrait can be so much more than just a representation of a person's appearance, but of their personality too, as we chatted with Sasha and got to know her again, since she is student who left and has returned.
For next art club, I definitely think that improving attendance is key, and trouble shooting why nobody wants to attend. Perhaps more advertising should be carried out, or maybe they don't like the projects we are giving them. Either way, we must find out what the problem is before we can correct it.
