Art Club #2

New additions to the art club!

Although the girls were once again delightful company, and they enjoyed the still life, we decided collectively to do something a bit more crafty and physical next time, since we had already spent two sessions doing still lives. I presented to them the options of wood burning and sculpture in clay. The problems with wood burning was that I only own one burning iron and although we could make it work in a club of four people, it would still leave the rest of us doing something completely different while we took turns with it. It also presents a sizable safety hazard, because although it is relatively safe, I have acquired more than a couple of burns using it in the past. Clay on the other hand is relatively inexpensive and so plenty of it can be used by our small group. What's most important however is the fact that they themselves are very excited at the prospect. Through communicating effectively with the members of the club and taking into consideration their opinions and views, I think that we'll be able to create a much more dynamic, interesting environment in which to create art. For next week, I think doing some preliminary research to give them inspiration would be a good idea, as well as practicing my own sculpting techniques and doing research into various online sources. I myself am not particularly good at sculpting, so we will learn and grow together.

This Tuesday we had another art club session. Like the first one, it was very relaxed and chilled out, with music chosen by the girls playing in the background and a simple still life to draw in acrylics. I encouraged them to go ahead without any sketches or preliminary drawings, just like last time, but this time with a different medium.
