When Alyssar approached me with the idea of starting a girls' basketball club, I seized the opportunity with great interest. I have long felt that our school community needed a sports club aimed specifically at girls, because I myself was greatly intimidated by the prospect of going to play football or basketball with a bunch of boys. Much as I would have loved to challenge the gender stereotypes about girls and sports that run rampant even in this day and age, I simply couldn't find it in me to brave the almost wholly male-dominated sports clubs at school, especially considering the fact that I'm not particularly athletic.
Exactly because I do not excel at sports, Ali's proposal was wonderful. She has the necessary skill, drive and ambition to take a bunch of hesitant girls long used to leaving basketball in the capable hands of guys, and turn these ladies into a basketball team. Our goal is to not only improve the basketball skills and overall fitness of anyone who joins, but to also form an actual team, that could compete ( and maybe win :) ) against other schools. That is, we gather enough people to make this possible.
This is where my role comes in. While Alissar is the brilliant player and coach, I have taken on the responsibility of marketing and popularizing the club. I'll be able to improve my basketball skills, my communication skills and hopefully become part of a team that will work to ease the hold of gender stereotypes in sports.
